Separating Procedures for Drop-Off Center
Recycling a 1-gallon plastic milk jug will save enough energy to keep a 100-watt bulb burning for 11 hours.
Fort Gordon Recycling Center is now accepting plastic containers for recycling. Specifically we are accepting HDPE #2 and PETE #1.
You are probably asking yourself what is HDPE #2 and PETE #1?
They are types of plastics, HDPE#2 commonly used for milk jugs, orange juice jugs and other containers, this type of plastic identified on the container with the number 2 in a recycling triangle.
PETE #1 are things like soda and water bottles - they are usually transparent and identified with the number 1 in a recycling triangle.
Special windows have been established at the recycling center, and containers at the satellite point near Freedom Park. Soon, containers will be available for office buildings for the collection of soda and water bottles as well as soda cans.
PLEASE remember to rinse the containers, especially the milk jugs.
Fort Gordon's Recycling Program has been going through a reorganization of sorts and will become more efficient in the future.
The recycling center is now open to the Off Post Community. However, in order to comply with Federal, State and Local laws, recycling must be economically feasible. The following changes have been made at the Fort Gordon Recycling Drop-Off Center, located at the corner of Chamberlain Ave. & 10th Street. This Center is a 24-hour drop off center and the manned operating hours are from 7:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Separating
Procedures for Drop-Off Center
-
Please empty all bags and break all newspaper bundles. Place empty brown paper bags in the cardboard area.
-
Place magazines in cardboard box marked "magazines only." Please keep all other books (hardback, TM's, FM's, junk mail) out of this box.
-
All white paper should be brought inside the front office during normal operating hours. After duty hours, deposit all white paper in the window marked "white paper only." Do not place white paper in the magazine or newspaper bins.
-
Color paper should be deposited in the window marked "color paper only."
-
Household goods packing paper should remain in boxes and placed in the cardboard area. This is not blank newspaper and should not be placed in newspaper bins.
-
Please remember to remove all paperclips (not staples), metal fasteners, peel-off-stick-on labels, and plastic wrapping from all paper.
Shredded paper should be long strip shredded instead of cross-cut, "if" you absolutely have to shred. When you strip shred paper the recycling machines can compress this type paper into one large bale and it will stay together when transported to the Paper Mill. Cross-cut and confetti type shredded paper when compressed will fall apart when the compression is released. Therefore, cross-cut & confetti type paper cannot be recycled and must be deposited in the landfill.
Most of the paper here at Fort Gordon does not "need" to be shredded at all since the Recycling Center is not an outside agency and when I sell the paper it goes straight to the Pulp Mill. It is then dumped into a Hydro-Pulping Machine that de-inks and bleaches the paper and turns it into a pulpy consistency, which is then turn back into paper products. This procedure is done to all of our paper here at Fort Gordon. I sell to only one Mill therefore there is no other people sorting or separating this paper.
Another reason for "not" shredding paper is The Unit Fund Buy-Back Program where you receive cash for your paper. White Paper (Bond Paper) is a high dollar valued item for recycling and will pay your Unit Fund 50% of the net profits from the sale of this paper. Current prices for white paper (not shredded) is about 3 1/4 cents per pound. Shredded or mixed paper is about 1 1/4 cents per pound. Cross-cut and Confetti type paper will cost Fort Gordon about 2 3/4 cents per pound to bury in the Richmond County Landfill, not to mention the needless manpower wasted shredding.
Please contact your Unit's Privacy Act Coordinator or call Mr. Don Johnson, Security Division, COMSEC, for further information about shredding your paper.
So the question is "to Shred or not to Shred" and the answer should be very simple...Look at the Cost!!!!!
