Foodie Friday: 2018 Food Trends

Happy New Year Foodie Fam!  We are starting off the new year by looking at what may be popular in the world of food in 2018.  There are always interesting new trends and techniques coming and going in every industry, however, the food industry: cooks, chefs and restaurateurs, are reaching new experimental levels.  Have you ever heard of molecular gastronomy? This combines home cooked food with science.  There are multiple branches of gastronomy, even a branch that prepares only one type of ingredient!

Gourmet food has always been a trend. Because its not only for the rich and well off, home food delivery services have became a thing.  Delivery services like Blue Apron and Hello Fresh dominated in 2017.  However, with so many options and so few standing apart many of them may shrink in the industry.

According to the 2018 Food Trend’s list distributed by Whole Foods, we can expect to see new and exciting floral flavors such as; lavender, rose and elderflower.  As well as, fun new ethnic food choices from the Middle East and Central America.  Expect to see more authentic cuisine representation in the restaurant sector including; Mexican, Peruvian, Ethiopian, etc.

Another trend is the adoption of the plant-based diet, such as veganism and vegetarianism. Companies are now creating new plant-based ingredients.  Heme is the newest on the market, it is a plant-based source of protein that creates an almost exact look of real meat.
